Executive-Artistic Director

Job Description

Job Title: Executive- Artistic Director

Appointment: One year (renewable subject to review)

Responsible to: Board of Directors

The Thief River Falls Area Community Theater (TRFACT) is located in Northern Minnesota. Our mission statement is two-fold: to provide local performers with outlets for creative expression; and to provide quality entertainment for audiences. We are a driving force in a thriving, rural community that strongly supports our mission and the arts in general. We have been in operation since 1996, creating a vibrant theater presence in the region.

The Executive and Artistic Director (EAD) is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and focus of a theater company. This person will report to and be governed by the Board of Directors. The EAD serves as the Chief Executive Office of ACT and is responsible for leadership in its administrative, artistic, and development functions. The EAD reports to the board. Other positions (part-time, seasonal contractors) report to the EAD. The position is year-round and full-time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

● Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the arts and maintain a positive legacy for ongoing and future opportunities for ACT

● Present, inform and motivate groups about ACT’s mission and programming

● Work effectively with board members, colleagues, donors and volunteers

● Attend performances and official functions as the official spokesperson of ACT

● Develop annual plans and goals for theater operations

● Refer major policy matters to the board of directors for final decisions.

Administration

● Develop, monitor, and manage budgets, as approved by the Board.

● Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff based upon the annual staffing plan approved by the Board

● Create job descriptions, advertise, interview and orient staff

● Manage human resource issues for employees, consultants and volunteers

Board of Directors

● Serve as ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board and Executive Committee

● Report at Board meetings on the state of theater operations

● Make recommendations on matters requiring Board attention or approval

Operations Management

● Productions and programs

● Public Events

● Facilities and Grounds

● Database Development and Management

● Volunteer Management

● Negotiate and approve contracts and agreements with suppliers, outside agencies, and other organizational entities

Marketing, Public Relations and External Communications

● Develop marketing/media communications plan and manage implementation

● Organize and implement promotional campaigns

● Manage all media and social media communications for ACT

Artistic Programming

● Identify shows and events for presentation or production under ACT sponsorship

● Negotiate and secure all contracts for all presentations and productions

● Maintain effective professional relationships with booking agents, venues and arts agencies to promote ACT and its mission

● Determine and manage selection and approval of equipment, vendors, and supplies

Development

● Develop an organizational fundraising plan, and direct, coordinate and oversee its implementation

● Write or oversee the writing and submission of grants for general operational programs, special projects and programs

● Create and oversee relationships with sponsors and donors, maintaining confidentiality while managing their donations

Desired Qualifications

● Attention to details and outstanding organizational skills

● A degree in theater or equivalent professional experience

● Experience helping to advance artistic vision of an organization

● An eye for quality theatrical productions

● At least three years of successful leadership experience of diverse personalities and age groups

● Willingness to work on a dynamic and flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

● A core belief in and practice of the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and comfortable with public speaking

● Fundraising experience, including grant writing and reporting

● Proficient understanding and use of finance and financial reports

● Significant experience interacting with boards, volunteers, and funders

● $40,000-$45,000 Annually
